Mount Rose
1/1/2008: Mount Rose
Access from Reno, NV:
Mount Rose Highway South to the second turnoff on right past Mount Rose Ski Area
Drive Time: 26 min
Run 1
I skied down crossing the drainage from Tamarack Lake. This area close to the roads is popular with families for sledding.
Skied Elevation: ~160’
Run 2
I skinned up Galena Creek & then up its northeast fork to the Mount Rose-Mount Houghton saddle, then followed Mount Rose’s southwest ridge to the summit finding dense timber to be problematic at times. I dropped my skis just below the summit because of what appeared to be thin snow, and continued on foot. The views from the summit were spectacular; Reno, Lake Tahoe and even Mount Shasta in the distance! Unfortunately, I forgot to take my camera. I retrieved my skis and descended the ridge a short ways before dropping into the south face. The snow was a mix of suncrust and slush due to the high temperatures. I skinned back out to the road instead of skiing down the remainder of Galena Creek due to thin coverage.
Skied Elevation: ~2600’
Total Skied Elevation: ~2760’
Total Elevation: ~2796’
