Oceanscape Network Virtual Exploration: Phoenix Islands

Post date: Oct 4, 2017 8:49:55 PM

The Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) is the largest and deepest marine preserve in the world. Above the water, 8 low-lying islands create a tropical paradise. But the real wonders are below the surface. Huge tracts of deep ocean are pierced by over 25 underwater volcanoes. Seamounts, atolls and submerged reefs create one of the last isolated coral archipelago ecosystems, virtually untouched by people. The waters here teem with 500 species of fish, 120 types of coral and an abundance of sharks and sea turtles.

Starting on Monday, October 9, you can dive deep with researchers from Schmidt Ocean Institute during this new virtual exploration. Blogs, videos, photos and interactive features will connect you, your students, your family and friends to the dark, deep world of the Phoenix Island Chain.
