Ring Report- 2014 Jul

We enjoyed many members and guests for our July meeting with special guest lecturer Nathan Allan.

President Bob Burd introduced our guests, and turned the meeting over to VP Jonathan May. Jonathan and Nathan grew up close to one another in rural Iowa, and their careers paralleled from ages 10 to 30+ years of age. Jonathan and Nathan learned magic and competed with one another throughout their careers.

Jonathan introduced his good friend Nathan, and then interviewed him with a series of questions about his career progression. Nathan shared his vision of magic paired with a twisted/warped sense of humor. He goes by "The Maniac of Magic" and "Wise Guy Entertainment". His creative process and high energy has developed into an adult-oriented show that is well-received around the country. Nathan shared his philosophy of self-management, avoiding agents, promoting himself, and controlling his own fate. He tightly scripts his routines. His advice to magicians is "To be yourself" and "Don't take yourself too seriously."

Nathan's favorite books are by Tarbell and The Fitzkee Trilogy, especially Showmanship for Magicians. His advice is to read books to learn magic instead of buying a bunch of props. When questioned about his favorite magicians, he admires Houdini, Dana Daniels, Jeff Hopson, and Mac King.

Nathan then fielded questions from our club members, and finished by sharing some tricks. Actually, he brought out a box of TRIX cereal with a bloody (fake) rabbit inside. This was an amusing example of "The Maniac of Magic's" style.

We concluded the evening with the sharing and sales of member's magical effects and a drawing for door prizes. A good time was had by all.
