I am a cognitive scientist and writer with a long and apparently incurable infatuation with language.
I earned a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Rochester, and subsequently spent 12 years on the faculty at Brown University. I am now an adjunct professor in Linguistics and Psychology at the University of Calgary, where I try as best as I can to infect students with my interests.
I'm the lead author of Sold on Language: How Advertisers Talk to You and What This Says About You and a regular blogger for Psychology Today and Language Log.
I occasionally consult for commercial and non-profit entities, and serve as the President of the Writers' Guild of Alberta.
