LIFE AMONG THE HINDUS

Biographical Details | Outline

HIS BIRTHDATE: Although Wikipedia and other sources mention that Phillip (his birth name, not Julian which he adopted later as his moniker) was born in 1873, he was actually born 6 years prior in AUGUST 11, 1867. Why there is a six-year discrepancy is unclear but hopefully, further research will unravel the reasons behind it.

NUMBER OF MARRIAGES: Phillip "Julian" Johnson was married 4 times.

NUMBER OF CHILDREN: He and his first wife had 2 daughters. The eldest one, named Ola, was born in 1891 and died tragically one year later. She was buried in Hyderabad, India. The second and surviving child, named Nola, was born in 1897.

NUMBER OF BOOKS THAT JOHNSON WROTE: 5 books that we are currently aware of. These include LIFE AMONG THE HINDUS; WITH A GREAT MASTER IN INDIA; CALL OF THE EAST; THE UNQUENCHABLE FLAME; and his magnus opus, THE PATH OF THE MASTERS. He also helped in the publication of Beas' English translation of Shiv Dayal Singh's SAR BACHAN. Johnson was working on a sequel to THE PATH OF THE MASTERS but it was never finished due to his untimely death in 1939. That book, which is still in manuscript form and housed at the Dera in India, was tentatively entitled MORE LIGHT ON THE PATH OF THE MASTERS.

MEMBER OF HILLAH TEMPLE (Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine): Initiated into the order on June 28, 1913, and "demitted" in March 1919, for reasons not specified.

A LETTER FROM JULIAN P. JOHNSON TO “NINA”

Letter dated November 28, 1938

ROUGHLY TWO MONTHS BEFORE HIS UNTIMELY DEATH

Excerpt

You write about me being in the beauty products business. Yes, I am medical adviser, only in that business and we are putting out both health and beauty products, and I will send you a little booklet about them. They are really of the most superior sort ever made. I will tell you our scheme. We want to make money to build a hospital and guest house for Americans and Europeans who come here and then we want to send out to the whole world the new book I am just now having printed on the Teachings of the Masters. It is called – “The Path of the Masters.” We want to send that out to the whole world, and have it printed in French and German also. Perhaps other languages. All of this will require a lot of money, and we must make it, rather than begging it. So this is our purpose and Miss Bruce, who makes the beauty products and is expert herbalist, is the leading genius in putting out these things. I hope you can run over and see what we are doing. May be you can join us in the our work. We have four Americans here now, all engaged in it, and two others . . . [on California] in January to join us and others will likely follow. By and by we shall need dozens more, and there will be a good living in it all for them all . . . .
