Then-Cardinal Ratzinger in a 1984 interview in Jesus magazine, about the 3rd Secret of Fatima:

"Cardinal Ratzinger, have you read what is called the Third Secret of Fatima: i.e., the one that Sister Lucia had sent to Pope John XXIII and which the latter did not wish to make known and consigned to the Vatican archives?"

"Yes, I have read it."

"Why has it not been revealed?"

"Because, according to the judgement of the Popes, it adds nothing new to what a Christian must know concerning what derives from Revelation: i.e., a radical call for conversion; the absolute importance of history; the dangers threatening the faith and the life of the Christian, and therefore of the world. And then the importance of the novissimi.  If it is not made public - at least for the time being - it is in order to prevent religious prophecy from being mistaken for a quest for the sensationalism. But the things contained in this Third Secret correspond to what has been announced in Scripture and has been said again and again in many other Marian apparitions, first of all that of Fatima in what is already known of what its message contains: conversion and penitence are the essential conditions for salvation."

Pope John Paul II on why the 3rd Secret was not Released (1980)

...if there is a message in which it is written that the oceans will flood whole areas of the earth, and that from one moment to the next millions of people will perish, truly the publication of such a message is no longer something to be so much desired."

...Many wish to know simply from curiosity and a taste for the sensational, but they forget that knowledge also implies responsibility. They only seek the satisfaction of their curiosity, and that is dangerous if at the same time they are not disposed to do something, and if they are convinced that it is impossible to do anything against evil.

The example of millions perishing in floods was the Pope's way of both revealing the contents of the 3rd Secret while not revealing them.  A great human tragedy is predicted, but not by flood.  If Akita is consistent with Fatima, then a large portion of the population of the earth is to be wiped out in a short time by "fire from the sky.""  In any case, his concern seems to be that revealing the Secret would spread despair, as he believes the calamity can not be avoided.

Many believe that the future Pope Benedict XVI was using the word novissimi to
refer to "last times."  If he meant to use the word as an Italian word, this is the only way to translate it.

But, the Italian word novissimi is taken directly from Latin, and so, Cardinal Ratzinger can easily have been using the word in it's Latin form, which appears 9 times in 5 verses in the Gospels. (Vulgate)  IN EVERY SINGLE CASE, THE WORD "NOVISSIMI" REFERS TO PEOPLE. Lowly people.  People who will surpass the "important" people, or those who believe they deserve more.

Mat 19:30 But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.

Mat 20:12 'These men who were hired last worked only one hour,' they said, 'and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.'

Mat 20:14 Take your pay and go. I want to give the man who was hired last the same as I gave you.

Mat 20:16 "So the last will be first, and the first will be last."

Mar 10:31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first."

Luk 13:30 Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last."

It has been, I believe, a consistent error for people to focus on Revelations and Apocalyptic citations from Scripture, while ignoring what seems to be a perfectly clear message: "said again and again in many other Marian apparitions, first of all that of Fatima."  What has been said again and again?  Not that we are in "last times."  But that we must pray and convert to change the course of history, to prevent disaster, to save souls.  Not Popes and Bishops, us, the novissimi, the last and the lowliest.

What else has been said again and again?  That the clergy are and will be corrupted and we are to pray for them. This is not new.  What is new in the 3rd Secret that would cause Pope John Paul II to believe we might "convinced that it is impossible to do anything against evil?"  Or that we will not recognize that "knowledge also implies responsibility." Mary informs us that a great chastisement is coming, something in the form of global disaster and millions will be wiped out.

How sad that our Popes have so little faith in the ecclesia that they don't treat us as the Royal Priesthood Scripture identifies us as. We are not children to be protected, but an army of Christ's soldiers ready for the battle if only they would lead us.  As Jesus tells us through Saint Faustina O, how great is the power of a soul filled with confidence.

198 On one occasion the Lord said to me, My daughter, your confidence and love restrain My justice, and I cannot inflict punishment because you hinder Me from doing so. Oh, how great is the power of a soul filled with confidence!
