How to fix the issue with windows update

STEP 1:

Generally, if you are unable to perform Windows Update then the possible cause could be due to corrupt Windows Update cache file or Windows Update Service being stopped. Please follow the steps mentioned below to resolve the issue:

  • Click Start (Pearl icon) and type cmd in Search box.
  • Right click on CMD appearing on top of the Start Menu.
  • And select Run as Administrator, click Continue if prompted.
  • At the command prompt, type net stop wuauserv and then press Enter.
  • Click Start, Run, and type %windir% and press Enter.
  • In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to SDold.
  • At the command prompt, type net start wuauserv and then press Enter.
  • Try updating Windows Vista.

NOTE: Please turn OFF your Antivirus and Firewall for temporarily so that you can perform Windows Update. Sometimes they block the access to Windows Update site.

STEP 2:

Please follow these steps as Catroot 2 folder might be corrupt.

  • Click Start (Pearl icon) and type cmd in Search box.
  • Right click on CMD appearing on top of the Start Menu.
  • And select Run as Administrator, click Continue if prompted.
  • In the command window type the following command, press Enter after you type each line:

net stop cryptsvc

ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 CR2OLD

net start cryptsvc

  • Try updating Windows Vista.

STEP 3:

Follow these steps as the dependent update service might have been stopped.

  • Click on Start (Pearl icon), type services in the Start Search box, and then click Services in the Programs list. If you are prompted for a confirmation, click Continue.
  • Select Cryptographic Services.
  • Make sure Startup Type is set to Automatic and Service is started.
  • (To do that, double click on the service and select Automatic).
  • Select Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
  •  (To do that, double click on the service and select Automatic).
  • Restart the computer and try to install the updates.

If the issue persists after following the above suggestions, then please provide me with few additional information to resolve the issue:

  • What type of Internet Connection are you using?
  •  Is it a dialup connection or a broadband connection?
  • If it is broadband, we will have more troubleshooting options to try.
  • What is the name of Antivirus and Firewall installed on the computer?
  • The Antivirus and Firewall may prevent the updates from being installed.
  • Are you able to download any other software(s)/updates?
  • We need to check if the issue is with the other application also.

Have you performed any troubleshooting after the issue started?

Please provide the Windows Update log file. To obtain that follow the steps mentioned below:

  • Click Start and type %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log in Search box.
  • Click on File and select Save as and save the file on the Desktop.
  • Right click on the log file saved on the desktop and select Send To and select Compressed (Zipped) folder.
  • Once the file is zipped, please attach to the email and send it to v-6jea@mssupport.microsoft.com

Please let me know if this resolves your issue. I look forward to hearing from you.
