4-H and FFA Showmen

The youth that show livestock at the Alameda County Fair are made up of 4-H and FFA members 9 - 19 years of age. Members either purchase or pick from their own herd, an animal(s) to raise and exhibit. Some show only one type of animals, while others show several species.

The members are required to care and train their animals so they can be shown in both market and showmanship classes. In the market class the animals are judged on their carcass merit, while in the showmanship class the member is judged on how well they present their animal to the judge.

Being able to care for and show an animal is a great opportunity for these young people. They are given the chance to learn responsibility, record keeping, management, cooperation and leadership. When all their hard work is complete , they can sell their animal at the Junior Livestock Auction.

Each exhibitor may sell two animals. This can sometimes be difficult as the members can become attached to their four-legged friends. The money earned goes to paying the debt of purchasing and raising the animals and hopefully there is some left over to save for the future.
