Urban Voices is a 30-week program offered through the Metropolitan Opera Guild.
Through the Urban Voices Initiative, JQS 1st and 2nd grade students enjoy 35-minute weekly choral lessons taught by Metropolitan Opera Guild trained choral artist, Mariel Dionne Manchester (Ms. M.). Mariel was a music teacher in Rhode Island for many years prior to her work with Urban Voices at the JQS. She believes that music should be available to all children and aims to share her enthusiasm and knowledge of music with the growing minds at JQS.
In Urban Voices classes students are exposed to music of different cultures, genres, and time periods. In addition to developing vocal, listening, text comprehension (lyrics), and verbal articulation skills, students are introduced to music vocabulary and notation. Students also learn about music through movement and rhythmic activities and have the opportunity to perform for their peers and school community.
At JQS, Urban Voices is funded for 2011-2012 by a BPS Arts Expansion Fund grant at EdVestors, JQSA, and a scholarship through the Metropolitan Opera Guild.
