The JQS Music Program is comprised of two full-time music teachers, Mr. Man an Ms. Messina, in addition to a series of partnerships with Boston-based non-profit organizations and institutions. All together, a diverse range of music education is offered to all JQS students.
The Josiah Quincy School Orchestra Program (JQOP) began with 25 3rd-5th graders in 2011, and now includes over 100 students from grades K-5, divided into five orchestras and a children's choir. Inspired by El Sistema, the Venezuelan initiative that uses music education as a vehicle for social change, JQOP offers a diverse musical and social experience, including leadership training for grades 5 and up. Over the next few years, the program will expand to include upper grades, so that students may continue their orchestra study throughout middle and high school. The Children's Choir Program joined JQOP in 2014, offering a before-school choral experience for students in grades 2-5. The choir and orchestras rehearse daily, and participate in monthly community days to build camaraderie throughout the program.
