Climate Committee

The School Climate Committee (SCC) has worked very hard over the past 5 years to come up with a unifying theme for our hard-working and spirited school.  The spirit of the school is embodied in our mascot, the dragon.

Like our JQS students, "the Chinese dragon symbolizes power and excellence, valiancy and boldness, heroism and perseverance, nobility and divinity.  A dragon overcomes obstacles to achieve success.  He is energetic, decisive, optimistic, intelligent and ambitious"*

In 2010, the SCC held an art contest for all JQS students to find our dragon.  Hundreds of children submitted their artwork, and the winning drawing is shown above.  The winning student artist was Nicurtis Robinson-McCaskill.  His design is used in the school's daily activities and can be seen throughout the school and JQS website.

The SCC also held a slogan contest.  Ashley Wong-Wynott and Deena Corkindale won the slogan contest.  Their winning slogans were combined to form one: “All fired up for success – Let’s scale up our learning!”

The School Mascot and our 'All Fired Up' slogan fueled several other programs.  Over a 5 year period, the School Climate Committee developed a program for JQS students titled  'Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports' (PBIS).  This is a school-wide system that rewards positive behavior, which is outlined in the "JQS Bill of Rights.”

In addition, the SCC made up a cheer for our students.  Every child at JQS can recite the following:

School Cheer - We Are The Dragons!

We are the Dragons!
The safe, respectful Dragons.

Everywhere we go-oh, People want to know-oh,
Who we are-re
So we tell them...

We are the Dragons!
The safe, respectful Dragons.

We scale up our learning,
So we continue growing.

Let's Go Dragons!!
