August 2020:  Thank you for visiting our page.  Our families' homeschool journeys have now ended and we will be archiving this site.  If you are interested in joining a local, non-sectarian homeschool co-operative, please follow this link.

Joy in Learning Homeschool Academy was founded in 2009 in order to create an academically-focused, college preparatory, and nonsectarian learning environment for homeschooling families in the Champaign-Urbana, Illinois area. In addition to focusing on academics such as science, history, writing, and literature, we spend a significant part of our day on computer science, art, PE, and recreational math. By sharing the group's talents and perspectives, as well as utilizing the latest online resources and technology, Joy in Learning provides an environment where students from all walks of life come together weekly and learn in a stimulating and encouraging way.

We have four levels of learning including: Early Grammar, Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric. All levels are combined for end-of-semester celebrations.  Please note our curriculum is not a supplement, but rather a full and rigorous load (with the exception of formal math).

Example work:  Joy in Learning's computer science students used Apple's Swift Playgrounds to analyze NASA global temperature data and determine temperature trends over the last 140 years. Students wrote programs to analyze and graph the data, wrote a script for the news reporters, videoed the news report, and used Apple's iMovie to create the final report. (The video clip at the beginning was used to inspire the students to use science to do a deeper analysis of the data in order to tell their story.)
