My wife and I visited Oahu in the summer of 2007. By pure luck, we found out about a free music festival happening the day after our arrival. This was the 25th Annual Slack Key Guitar Festival, being held at Kapi’olani Regional Park, below the Diamond Head crater at Waikiki. It featured an incredible array of slack key masters. The music was so fine, I was inspired to pick up the guitar again after a 20-year break. Way back when, I was into finger-style folk and country blues guitar. It was easy to slide into slack key (no pun intended, really), which is finger-style in various open tunings. I’ve been learning slack key tunes since then.
