What is an Underwater Turbine? An underwater turbine is similar to a wind turbine, but a water turbine uses currents in rivers and oceans to power itself. The energy in the underwater current is strong enough to move the blade or rotor on the turbine, and that mechanical energy from the blade is what turns the generator to create electrical energy. Water has a tremendous amount of power inside of its slow moving, underwater currents, and the aim of underwater turbines are to harness this power as a renewable energy source. Areas of interest for underwater exploit include the Gulf Stream and New York's East River.
