Introduction

Welcome to my webpage! This site is dedicated to my DIY audio interests, but also includes information related to Hyperacusis (hypersensitivity to certain sounds), Tinnitus (ringing ears), and Phonophobia (fear of sound). I have hyperacusis and I hope to increase awareness of this difficult health condition. Both tinnitus and hyperacusis are widely misunderstood by much of the medical community. If you happen to suffer from either Hyperacusis or Tinnitus, you can find help at Jonathan Hazell's website (http://www.tinnitus.org).

Due to an accident I had with my high-end audio hobby, I developed hyperacusis and this sent me down a path of self destruction. In finding help I learned about the Jastreboff Model for Hearing and Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT). TRT is the only real treatment for tinnitus, hyperacusis, and phonophobia.

In the paper "Hearing, Beliefs, and Blind Testing"
(see attachments below) I tell my story explaining how I became disabled, explain the Jastreboff Model, and offer my own experiences, ideas, and opinions about how the model relates to my audiophile hobby. I think the Jastreboff Model answers many questions concerning audiophiles, such as ABX blind testing versus subjective listening tests.

The Jastreboff Model explains that ears work on feedback
, just like the rest of our nervous system. And, beliefs play an important role in that feedback. The brain increases the gain for sounds that have special importance and filters out sounds that don't (when heard on a regular basis).

Well, I hope you find my story interesting - I really enjoyed writing it.

Disclaimer: My paper, "Hearing, Beliefs, and Blind Testing," is in no way intended as instructions on how to treat Tinnitus, Hyperacusis, Phonophobia, or any other ear condition. If you have a concern about your ears always contact your local health professionals. If you have tinnitus or hyperacusis also visit Jonathan Hazell's website for information on TRT and a list of TRT trained doctors.

Best Regards,
