John Benson is a legendary mathematics teacher who has inspired two generations of mathematics students. During his 41-year career he has received many awards, including the Teacher Excellence Award from ETHS, the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics Teaching, and the T.E. Rine Secondary Mathematics Teaching Award from the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Outside of the classroom, Benson has co-authored textbooks, given hundreds of presentations to teachers about teaching math, continuously participated in Project EXCITE, and founded the North Suburban Mathematics League. Countless students have remarked on the tremendous impact John Benson has had on their lives. A former student of John Benson recently said “not only did no one teach me more about math, no one taught me more about *caring* than Mr. Benson. What I learned in his classroom I use and value every day.” I’m sure many people reading this have similar feelings and would like to express their gratitude to John Benson. There are several ways in which this can be done:
The John Benson Scholarship: In recognition of the dramatic impact John Benson has had on his students and in light of his contributions to the field of math education the ETHS Math Department is establishing a scholarship in his name to annually recognize one student majoring in mathematics with the intent to pursue either a career in teaching math at any level or a career in the field of mathematics. One way to show your appreciation is by making a tax-deductible donation of any amount to the John Benson Scholarship.
Donate by check: Make checks payable to Evanston Township High School and on the check memo line write "John Benson Scholarship." Donations should be sent to: Valerie Ripple, Math Dept., ETHS, 1600 Dodge Ave., Evanston, Illinois, 60201.
Donate on-line: People on Facebook can donate on-line via a Facebook Cause.
The Retirement Party: We will be hosting a party to celebrate and honor John Benson’s extensive career. This party is open to everyone (current students, former students, parents, relatives, friends, and anyone else who wishes to congratulate John). You are also welcome to bring your family to this party. If you know you'll be attending please RSVP with the number of people attending so we have an idea of how many to expect.
