The Joe Cianciotto list: Monster movies

I remember the first monster movie I ever saw was “Little Shop of Horrors.” It was a musical with a giant Venus flytrap that ate people. My mother told me “Joe Cianciotto, keep on watching those movies, and you’ll have bad dreams.” But I never did. Instead, I developed a soft spot in my heart for monster films.

As a tribute to that, here are my top monster movies of all time. As a side note, I’m not including any films that feature classic monsters such as vampires and werewolves. We’re sticking to bigger creatures that don’t resemble humans. Tremors: A small town falls under siege by prehistoric worm-like creatures as huge as buses. This is the basic plot and man, what a thrill-ride this film is. Deep Rising: This movie flew under the radar, but it was such a joy to watch. In it, a group of mercenaries arrives at a cruise liner with the intention of stealing valuables on board. Unbeknownst to them, a sea monster has taken hold of said liner and proceeds to kill everyone on board.

Jaws: This was Steven Spielberg’s first movie and man, what a blockbuster it turned out to be. Released over 40 years ago, “Jaws” is still the gold standard in shark movies.

Aliens: James Cameron’s “Aliens” has the Joe Cianciotto seal of approval in both horror and science fiction. The action is crazy, and Cameron amps up everything from the original classic.

Joe Cianciotto is an architect based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Aside from architecture, Joe loves movies. Read more about his passion on this page.
