Virtual reality, or VR, is the stuff dreams are made of – a different world limited only by the imagination of the software creator. Much has been written about VR tech, and some of the most memorable science-fiction movies had VR at their core. Let’s take a quick look at some of the greatest films with VR.

Tron

When “Tron” was released in the ‘80s, no one was prepared for it. It was an avant-garde production that broke down so many barriers. VR as we know it wasn’t represented in the movie. However, the world in which our hero gets sucked into is as virtual as it gets, blurring the lines between virtual and reality.

The Lawnmower Man

Back in 1992, a movie adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Lawnmower Man” was released. VR tech was the driving force of the film and eventually changed into its Deus Ex Machina. It was both breathtaking and terrifying as the Lawnmower Man was granted powers of an immortal, with no one seems capable of stopping him.

The Matrix

“The Matrix” is probably the most iconic of all the iconic VR-driven films. Although the Wachowski’s vision of the future was on par with most sci-fi directors, they excelled in style and cinematography. The result? A stunning sci-fi opera that was both dark and explosive. Many of the filmmaking techniques pioneered by the makers of “The Matrix” are being used in today’s movies.
