It seems there are only three kinds of smartphones in the world, Apple’s, Samsung’s, and everyone else’s. But while Samsung phones have the edge when it comes to affordability, specs and craftsmanship have always been the iPhone and Apple’s standard. While many people have found fault with iPhones (not without a lot of effort), the phone still stands out in consumers’ eyes as the gold standard of smartphones.

Many people, however, are unfamiliar with the rise of the iPhone. It wasn’t the first iPhone that truly made its mark. It was the 3G version. Before the iPhone 3G came out, phones (including earlier versions of the iPhone) were used for calling, sending SMS, taking low-res photos, browsing the net on a simplified browser, and maybe even playing a primitive app or two in the form of simple games.

But with the iPhone 3G came something that would reshape the industry – APPS. Because of these applications, a new industry was created, an industry that opened countless worlds for smartphone users. All of a sudden the iPhone was no longer a phone. It could do things from check the user’s heartbeat and run play-by-play commentary on a football game to give details on the closest movie theater’s screenings and set you up on a date.

The iPhone 3G started with 550 apps, but then ballooned to 15,000 apps in just a few months. This and the countless innovations brought about by apps all but ensured the iPhone’s dominance in the tech industry.
