According to Joe Cianciotto, there was actually a film adaptation of the DC Comics’ Justice League back in 2007 that was supposed to be directed by Mad Max director George Miller. The film didn’t materialize, however, and talk about has dissipated ever since. Let’s find out what happened.

Production and casting Justice League: Mortal remains one of the great ‘what ifs’ in Hollywood films, says Joe Cianciotto. Production began in 2007 when Warner Bros. hired husband and wife duo Michele and Kieran Mulroney as the scriptwriters. The film was supposed to star Armie Hammer as Batman, D J Catrona as Superman, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, Common as Green Lantern, Adam Brody as The Flash and Santiago Cabrera playing Aquaman, and finally, Jay Baruchel as the villain Maxwell Lord.

The plot According to Joe Cianciotto the film would have begun and ended with the funeral of Barry Allen who sacrificed his life after his body was possessed by Maxwell Lord to form a large OMAC creature. OMAC’s are fictional cyborgs appearing in DC comics with a mission to annihilate beings with superpowers. This plot could effectively portray The Flash as the star of the film, but with enough screen time for the other superheroes also. Barry’s death, it was said, mimicked his sacrifice on Crisis on Infinite Earths, and Wally West would eventually take his place in the Justice League. Canceling the film Joe Cianciotto cites two compelling reasons why filming for Justice League Mortal were canceled. First of these is the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike that placed the filming on hold, followed by a series of production cancellations even as the strike had ended. The second reason that further held filming was about tax issues in Australia, when Warner Bros. was denied tax credits by the Australian government which required Australian actors to be cast as a requisite for Warner Bros. to start filming.
