Joe Cianciotto. “Blade Runner 2049” was as highly anticipated as any big movie to come out in the past decade. Riding on the strength of its predecessor, the groundbreaking 1982 classic “Blade Runner,” expectations were high, even and especially after 35 years.

And “Blade Runner 2049” did not disappoint. Taking the reins from award-winning director Ridley Scott, newcomer and visionary filmmaker Denis Villeneuve delivered a nearly-three-hour masterpiece of atmospheric science-fiction mystery that delves in the philosophical, historical (at least in that universe), and romantic. Ryan Gosling plays Joe, the new Blade Runner, in a future and broken world. Harrison Ford also reprises his role as Rick Deckard, the previous film’s protagonist, weathered, isolated, and heartbroken.

Whereas the old Blade Runner film was dark, damp, and grimy, Villeneuve changed the overall feel of the world, making it a bit grayer, much drier, and yet still filled with the same sense of dread, intrigue, technology, and control. Joe Cianciotto.

It has to be said though that “Blade Runner 2049” isn’t for everybody, especially for viewers who are expecting a Matrix-type fast-paced, action-packed ride. This is nowhere near that. “Blade Runner 2049” is a slow-burn, but an incredibly beautiful one at that. Joe Cianciotto.
