Alfonso Cuarón: A Master Director’s Pieces

I’ve always though Alfonso Cuarón was a genius director. He had a way of looking at a scene like only he could. There is a distinct atmosphere with many of his works that border of magical realism. Let’s visit some of them.

Children of Men: Arguably his best work, Cuarón’s “Children of Men” was grim and hopeless at turns. There was a sense of despair for the entire human race, with only the faintest glimmer of hope. Kudos to Cuarón for emphasizing the bleakness with superb cinematography.

Y Tu Mamá También: Through “Y Tu Mama Tambien,” Cuarón lovingly crafts the different side of sexual awakenings, with metaphysical dialogue, all on heartbreak, sex, and the nature of life itself.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: Many critics have called this third film the best of the blockbuster franchise, thanks in large part to Cuarón’s vision of the Potterverse.

Gravity: “Gravity” was Cuarón’s attempt at science fiction, and what an attempt it was. With only Sandra Bullock carrying the film, for the most part, Cuarón kept audiences at the edge of their seats with this outer space thriller.

Great Expectations: One of Cuarón’s earlier works, this modern retelling of the classic, “Great Expectations” was just as whimsical, heartbreaking, and promising as any other version, and perhaps even better. It also had one of our favorite soundtracks of all-time.
