PBL #3- Slice of Life

One of my favorite things to study is the cultures of the world. I love learning about the many people we share this planet with and the various traditions they have developed. The world is our home and we should all be knowledgeable of it and the diverse cultures throughout. This project will get students to think outside of their homes, social networks, schools, small towns, and even country and get them thinking about their neighbors in the world. Students will learn about a culture they find interesting by constructing a presentation (in 6 groups of 4) that showcases various aspects of a culture of their choosing. The presentation (google presentation, prezi, or video) will include details such as traditions, important people and cities, language, history, and geography but I will have the students put a special focus on the food culture. Food is an essential part of all cultures that can tell a lot about the people and their lives. Many people now days are losing sight of the importance of food culture and it is greatly important that the next generations develop an interest in food in their own lives and around the world. Students will be encouraged to try to prepare a dish from the culture of their choice or at least describe and provide examples of traditional food. Students will also have to explain details about the traditional food and what it tells us about the people to whom it belongs. I hope this project will get kids interested the people of the world and food culture in their own lives.
