About Us

Our Mission
The purpose of this ministry is to promote and cultivate spiritual and mental growth by spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ through song at James Madison University and the surrounding community.

Who We Are
Membership in CGS is open to all JMU students.  In fact,  our members come from a variety of musical, academic, and religious backgrounds.  Since we do not hold auditions, some members are experienced soloists while others had never sung in front of an audience before joining the group.  We represent many majors at JMU including English, finance, computer science, music industry and more.  We also represent several different religious denominations, but we all share a love of Gospel music and ministry.  We welcome any JMU students who are interested in our mission to join us!

What We Do
The Contemporary Gospel Singers rehearse every Tuesday at 7:00 pm.  We perform during Homecoming and Parents’ Weekend in the fall.  In the spring, we are involved with the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, Gospel Cafe, and of course, the Gospel Extravaganza.  We also sing at local churches throughout the school year.
