Monica Shelley



Monica trained as a linguist specialising in German; she is fluent in French; and has a working knowledge of Italian, Spanish, Catalan and Hungarian.

She has a background in consumer affairs, having worked for the Consumers' Association, publishers of Which and  the National Consumer Council ; she is a member of the Executive Committee of the National Federation of Consumers

At the OU since 1977 Monica has worked on a wide variety of courses, starting with Community Education packs and courses. She was a founder member of the Centre for Modern Languages (now the Department of Languages) and has worked in IET.

She is currently working on a major research project to investigate the skills and attributes required by tutors teaching languages at a distance, and has published widely in this area.
 
In 2006 she collaborated with Systems Department colleagues in the production of a special issue of Environmental Science and Policy and is currently preparing a special issue of Environmental Policy and Governance.

Over 2007 and 2008 she worked on the Open Door project, in which OU course materials were supplied to seven partners in Sub Saharan Africa, and is now developing further initiatives in this area.

Teaching

From 2005-2006 I chaired T188 Making Policies Work: Systems Thinking in Government and Management and have worked on converting this course to a Continuing Professional Development pack.

Academic interests

Monica Shelley has interests in consumer education, systems thinking and practice and the teaching of foreign languages at a distance.
