I am a Professor of Economics, the current Economics Research Division Lead, and interim Head of the Department of Economics at the University of Reading. I have been at Reading since 2013, and before that I was lecturer at the University of Birmingham for four years. I previously did an MPhil, DPhil and Postdoc at the University of Oxford.
My research is, broadly speaking, on applied econometrics, with a particular focus on sport. I particularly enjoy the relative abundance of data in sport, and the clarity of rules and their enforcement, as this provides a fascinating arena in which to observe economic activity. Since the Covid-19 lockdown I've been organising the Reading Online Sport Economics Seminars.
See my Research page, my Ideas page or my Google Scholar page for more information. My CV is here.
I'm a Scorecasting Economist, working with my colleague Carl Singleton to forecast scorelines for football matches. It's a bit of fun, but it also is providing interesting research offshoots too.
I'm also affiliated with the Programme for Economic Modelling (EMoD) at the Institute for New Economic Thinking at the Oxford Martin School and the Research Program in Forecasting at George Washington University.
I supervise a number of PhD students. See my Supervision page for more information.
I teach on the Economics of Sport (EC325); see my Teaching page for more information.
