English 611 Seminar Paper

Petruzella, Brenda Arnett. “Grammar Instruction: What Teachers Say.” The English Journal Nov. 1996. pp. 68-72.

The author calls for revitalizing grammar instruction in the English composition classroom. Arguing against rote, “drill and kill” approaches to learning grammar, she notes the importance of meaningful exercises, and teaching punctuation and syntactical skills in the context of students’ own writing.

An interesting aspect of Petruzella’s argument is her description of the difficulties students face—both in school and in the workplace—when they lack the grammar skills needed to communicate effectively.
