This is a private website run by Dr Brynjar Lia, professor of Middle East Studies at the University of Oslo and an adjunct research professor at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI). Until January 2011 Dr Lia was head of FFI's terrorism research group, a group of Norwegian academics specialising in the study of terrorism and political violence, with a particular focus on Islamist militancy.
This website is dedicated to present past and ongoing research by Lia and his colleagues at FFI's terrorism research group. The research group was founded in 1999 and is currently one of the world's leading centres for the study of violent Islamism. FFI is the Norwegian acronym for Forsvarets forskningsinstitutt, or "The Norwegian Defence Research Establishment". FFI employs nearly 700 people and is owned by the Ministry of Defence. It is the prime institution responsible for defence-related research in Norway.. Read more..
