Jean-François Schaff, PhD

I am an entrepreneur, engineer and quantum physicist living in Réunion, which is an overseas department and region of France located in the Indian Ocean.

From 2017 to 2023 I was in Bordeaux, were I co-founded Postelo. I was its CEO & CTO. The company was sold to a competitor in April 2023. Before that, I was a quantum researcher and engineer.

From 2014 to the end of 2016, I have worked at Muquans, where I was in charge of the research and development activities related to the development of a quantum atomic clock based on laser-cooled atoms. Our goal was to build the best atomic clock commercially available, which shifts by less than 1 second in 30 million years (1E-15 stability, target accuracy: 5E-15).

I previously worked as a researcher at the TU Wien (Vienna University of Technology), in the group of Pr Jörg Schmiedmayer, located at the Atominstitut in Vienna, Austria.

Check out my publications here.

My research was focused on the experimental study of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), atom interferometry with Bose-Einstein condensates, entanglement in many-body systems, and the fast manipulation of quantum systems. This latter subject is the topic of my PhD thesis. I also worked on transport properties in disordered media.

I defended my PhD in September 2011 at the Institut non linéaire de Nice where I worked with Dr Guillaume Labeyrie (experiments) and Pr Patrizia Vignolo (theory). This laboratory is a joint institute of Université de Nice Sophia Antipoli and CNRS.

I previously did my master thesis in the group of Pr Alain Aspect at Institut d'Optique, in the team led by Assistant Pr Vincent Josse and Pr Philippe Bouyer. There, I worked on creating 3D random optical potentials for Anderson localization experiments.

I graduated from the French science and technology grande école Telecom ParisTech in 2008, and, the same year, obtained a Master of Science from Université Paris Sud (Paris 11, Orsay).
