SRI Rice (System of Rice Intensification)

Approach

Rice is the staple food of almost all the population of Aceh.  Using SRI technologies can increase yields by over 50%.  SRI uses  organic techniques restore soil fertility and improve a healthy, ecological environment in the community.  Sale of increased yields beyond consumption needs generate additional working capital needed by farmers to expand out of just rice production into more profitable enterprises such as vegetables, spinach, sawi, salad, spring onions, and chillis and small livestock.  JFPR of SRI rice has a large potential to reduce poverty through increased incomes and employment creation is large.

SRI development like other organic farming, has big prospects in Aceh, since there is limitation of organic foods supplied to Aceh market currently.  With 4 million people eating rice in Aceh and with rice consumption per capita 180 Kg, Aceh needs 720.000 ton of rice each year. If 10% of them prefer to eat organic rice, 72.000 ton organic rice needed by Aceh.

JFPR has created a community training centre or village learning point for coastal families to increase productivity and profits from rice lands available along coastal areas in Aceh Besar.

Additional Income from Organic Fertelizer

Apart from SRI, farmers also get additional income from organic fertilizer production, that has been produced 10 ton of fertilizer per month. With working capital Rp 400/Kg, farmers can sell compost  Rp 1.000 per Kg, so they will get profit  Rp 600 for each kg sold. In a month, This group can earn additional Rp 12.000.000,- from compost activity.  An additional income above the benefits from SRI for each member of US $ 40/month.

Micro finance : saving have been made by each member in a community saving and lending group.  Micro loans are made to individual members as start up capital for other enterprises.

ICT – PIM

Program Pelayanan Informasi Masyarakat (PIM) has been developed by JFPR to become a strategic tool to replicate success story of farmers to other farmers. With its open system, everyone can upload the information on technical skills and information they wish to share with others.  The PIM learning framework provided includes Steps in setting up a livelihood enterprise, Finance needed, Work Plan and Cash Flow and useful Marketing and technical support contacts. PIM will also be distributed to Livelihood Services Centres such as JFPR Jruek Bak Kree Training Centre, Kadin, BPP+ in Agriculture Dinas etc

Next Steps

To replicate this exciting eco livelihoods potential and exploit the market potential, the following activities should be carried out  :

·               Site Visits to improve understanding of organic planting for other farmer groups also need to be done, including conducting site visit, and training/workshop/demplot.

·               Set up organic food outlet in strategic area as a show case not only for organic food but also for JFPR program

·               Build cooperations with premium outlet such as Blang Rakal Supermarket to market organic food for middle up class, that are willing to pay higher price for healthy food.

·               Market education: To make more people aware about the benefit of healthy food, and motivate them to switch from chemical food to organic food.  .

Critical Factors

On the other hand JFPR projects also need to pay attention to several critical factors that can affect project performance such as compost availability.

Conclusion

SRI and healthy Organic rice has huge market potential in Aceh. A proper organic rice production system is needed to grab this opportunity to empower local farmers to supply good quality organic products. Lambeugak is one of organic farming replicable model, designed to fulfill that market needs, as well as increase farmers income in order to reduce  poverty levels in Aceh.
