|I am currently seeking a position that integrates my desire to teach students with my passion for composition and literature. I currently hold a Michigan Professional teaching certificate as well as a Pennsylvania Instructional II Professional Certificate to teach English for grades 7-12 where I previously taught high school English in the Haverford School District outside of Philadelphia for the past twelve years.
Originally from West Michigan, I completed my undergraduate teacher education program at Western Michigan University where I majored in English and education and minored in communication studies and political science. Shortly after graduating, I moved to Pennsylvania where I continued to pursue my educational interests at Chatham College. I completed my masters thesis and earned my Master of Liberal Arts from Chatham in December of 2003. I have continued to pursue my professional development through graduate-level courses at West Chester University and through my involvement with a number of professional organizations.
As a teacher of reading and writing, it is vital that my students come to understand themselves as creators of knowledge and not simply consumers. A teacher's impact lies in how well she promotes wonder, encourages critical questioning, and facilitates creativity, collaboration, and creation. Throughout my time as an educator, I have curated opportunities for students to connect with authentic audiences. By differentiating my instruction using a variety of formative assessment techniques and innovative use of digital tools, I have been successful in fostering critical inquiry and communication skills outlined by our Common Core standards. My previous role as the Classrooms for the Future (CFF) Technology Coach has afforded me opportunities to incorporate my interest in digital teaching strategies into both my classroom practice as well as help fellow teachers learn more about meaningful integration of Web 2.0 tools. In addition to getting to know students in the classroom setting, I have also sponsored a number of extracurricular activities. Over the past few years, I have worked with students as a faculty sponsor for fundraising clubs, the Speech and Debate team, Writers Guild, among others.
Please peruse my portfolio and explore my credentials. Should you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me. Thank you for your time and consideration.
