Welcome to Jennifer Diaz's Portfolio!

Welcome to my portfolio! I am a sixth grade teacher who is passionate about teaching and learning along with my students. This portfolio is intended to document my thoughts, ideas, and learning as I complete the CUE Innovative Educator Certificate.

My name is Jennifer Diaz and I am excited to be joining this amazing group of educators! I have been teaching for 11 years now and I am currently teaching thirty-three 6th graders (from Newcomer English learners to GATE) in Irvine, CA. I've also taught 1st, 3rd, and 5th. I have a BS in Child Development and a MS in Curriculum in Education with an emphasis on Technology (CSUFullerton). Some of my professional passions are integrating technology, project-based learning, and differentiation. I currently work at an amazing school, and my class is BYOD; I have acquired almost a 2:1 ratio of Chromebooks and iPads to student, and my students are encouraged to bring whatever else they have from home - including phones - to my class daily and that gets us to nearly 1:1. So far it is working out nicely! I am also a HUGE proponent of teaching kids how to behave appropriately online.

I've been using tech for a while now and if there is one thing I have learned, it is that tech often doesn't work out the way you plan. So I don't try to make the "perfect" lesson anymore. Instead, I start with an idea (with an end goal in mind) and my students and I usually work together to plan, institute, trouble-shoot and improve how we use tech in our class. Since our classroom is highly student-led, they feel empowered to research and suggest new, better ways of collaborating, communicating, and creating online. And honestly, some of them already know way more than I do in certain areas! One time early in this school year, the Superintendent walked through my room with my principal (unannounced, of course!) to see us struggling to access our student blogs for the first time. I thought it must have looked like a mess, but when I looked up, all my kiddos were problem solving and helping each other be successful. So yay for them!

I hope this gives you a little insight into who I am a teacher. I also like 80's music, quoting movies, inspirational memes, cooking, yoga, drinking wine, and hanging out with my family and friends. I am a wife and mom to three kids aged 18, 9, and 7. Oldest in college, middle child with Autism, and the littlest one who is a princess-in-training! You will usually catch me online at night after everyone has gone to bed...

Looking forward to learning from and with all of you! Let's BE MORE AWESOME together!!!
