Chai Tea

From Jeanette's Healthy Living.

Adapted from Simply Recipes.  This Chai Tea is wonderfully fragrant.  The original recipe provides ranges for the amount of spices and cooking/steeping times.  Since I like a strong Chai, I used the upper range of spices and longer cooking and steeping times.

Chai Tea Base

1 star anise

12 whole cloves

7 whole allspice

2 three-inch sticks cinnamon

7 whole white peppercorns

1 green cardamon pod, cracked open to release seeds

1 cup water

4 cups low fat milk or almond milk

2 tablespoons loose black tea leaves or 8 bags black tea (I used English Breakfast)
Agave nectar or honey, if desired

Place Chai Tea Base ingredients in a small saucepan.  Bring to a boil, then remove from heat.  Let steep, covered, for 20 minutes.

Add milk to Chai Tea Base and bring it just to a boil; then remove from heat.

Add tea to the milk mixture and let steep for 10 minutes, covered.  Strain spices from Chai Tea.

Serve with agave nectar or honey, if desired.
