Acoustic monitoring

Listening where the animals are

Acoustic monitoring uses data-logging acoustic receivers (listening stations) to detect individual animals that are tagged with an acoustic tag. The tag generates a series of coded "pings" which are detected by the receivers if the animal is within range. This allows collecting presence/absence data as well as depth and temperature data if tags are equipped with the respective sensors.

Bull sharks in Fiji have been equipped with acoustic tags to monitor their presence/absence on Shark Reef and surrounding reefs as well as their small-scale movements between reef patches.
