NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory Team Space Design Competition


Abstract


We present an algorithm for identifying safe landing zones. We address this problem in three aspects:
(1)
slope orientation estimation using footpad-centric design;
(2) hazard detection using locally smooth surface approximation, and
(3)
rock localization by shadow analysis.
We validate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed method and achieve over 96%
accuracy under 10 seconds.
