Curious Findings: Everything

Having a world of information within the palm of your hand is a great and powerful thing. Being able to access that information - instantly - with a few clicks and some typing is something long sought after and something that anyone can benefit from.

If you have been using Windows for a while, I am sure you have run into several issues when it comes to finding the file you're looking for on your harddrive (HDD). Generally, starting off the process of finding what you want is easy - you open the search feature on Windows, you type what you are looking for and then you search. And then you wait, and wait..and wait. When the search process is finally completed, you turn up empty handed.

Why empty handed? Well, maybe because you were tired of Windows being "slow" and decided to follow a performance improvement article that advised you to turn off the indexing service or your system hasn't been idle enough to index that part of your harddrive. Either way, regardless of the reason, it's not part of Windows's search's database and so you won't find it through Windows's search.

If Windows search has not indexed the location of the file on your HDD, it is as good as your file not existing. There is simply no way to access information through a search engine if that engine does not know it exists. So what now? Well, you have a few choices:

         1. Re-enable the indexing services on your computer and allow it to sit idle over a long period of time
         2. Re-enable the indexing service and start a manual index build

Although these methods both require you to wait, and we all know that waiting is the last thing you want to do…

Enter the wonderful program called Everything by VoidTools and all these problems disappear. With the installation of a really small program (293 KB at time of writing), you can access every file on any local NTFS drive on your system - instantly. You simply run Everything, type a search in the search box and the results are instantly (or close enough to instantly) displayed. The best part is, you don't need to wait forever for Everything to index your drive because it does that pretty much instantly too (so leave that annoying service off if you wish).

So, what are you waiting for? Download Everything and see for yourself just how useful and powerful Everything really is.

VB Forum Upgrade!

We finally got to upgrade our forums last night - Mysticales was given the OK to go ahead and was given the proper access. There are several new features that I am glad we updated for which makes moderating a whole lot easier. However, I can't do much to the forums seeing how I'm still limited on my forum access (shocked).

We will be adding several new features to the forums, and hopefully removing some of those pesky ones that we've had before - maybe post count :o All will come with time

Power Outage FTW!

So, I was anxiously awaiting 6:30 PM (EST) yesterday as I had something very important to do on that day. However, at 5:30 I was watching the news and saw some incoming thunder storms. I thought they would just passby as usual, but instead they struck with vengence! This was the worst storm I've been in for quite some time, and it came at the worst time possible.

I was on IRC with a few people and told them a storm was coming - and then, it struck. A few BOOMs were in the background as I typed, and then...the lights dimmed and then only a few seconds later the only thing I could see was my laptop.

I was scheduled to do something important at 6:30, so I anxiously awaited the time to come, hoping that power would be restored. However, it was not resotred when the time came around. So then 30 more minutes went by and...nothing. I decided it was enough, I grabbed my laptop and rode over to my grandparents house only a few miles away where they suprisingly had power! I hooked everything up and got on when my scheduled event was half done, I missed the first half!

So, after that event was done I went home to my "black" house with power still out. I stayed awake until 10:20 hoping we would get power back - but no such luck. Seems like we got power finally at 3 something this morning - man, those lazy bums took forever..oh well

Nintey-Nine Nights Demo (360)

So, I woke up this morning and found that the Nintey-Nine Nights demo was on the Xbox Live Marketplace. I have been looking forward to this demo for quite some time, so I was suprised to see it up! I immediately downloaded it and then decided to write an article over at QJ about it since it is some nice information ;)

My first run through the demo was fun - except I kept on dying! I did not know why, so I just put the controller down and shut off the console - heck trying twice is enough, time to take a break! So, I just picked up the controller again a few hours later and went through the entire game. I learned quite a lot about the game's interface - ordering troops around, equiping items, using new moves/combos, health increases/items, combos, etc. I finally had a grasp of the game, and after playing 33min straight I beat the demo! I didn't go everywhere in the demo, so you might get 40 minutes out of it if you tried, but I was very satisfied.

Skype - Bad Quality

Well, after downloading Skype today and testing it out, I was impressed by the number of features. This is truely a great program, but the voice quality is a major drawback. With my microphone (whose quality is great for default recording) sounded choppy and inconsistent on Skype. At times, when talking, the output voice would lower in tone and then come back up again - and sometimes even make it difficult to understand.

It might be because I'm not talking loud enough, but I'd rather not scream into the microphone when I shouldn't have to. Well, Skype allows me to call landline phones and mobile phones in the US, so I am very satisfied with this. I might just be using this a few times just cause I can :p

 Wii - October 2nd Launch?

There has been several rumors going around recently with the Wii and the possible price and launch date. What we know is that both of these figures will be announced before September. It is possible that all of this will be announced Leipzig Games Convention (Aug 24-27th).  It is also known that the price will be lower than 250USD, other than that - that is all we know.

So, how did we get a launch date of October 2nd? Well, read my article covering the rumor over at the Wii site of Quick Journal here.

Personal Blurb

July 27th 2006 -

It has been 4 days since I had operation on my wisdom teeth, and I'm finally able to talk again. This comes just in time as I have something very important to do tomorrow that involves talking! All I can say is stay tumm ned to QJ, and hopefully you will hear something you will like!
