 El dia de los muertos/ The Day of the Dead

Description:
Ever wonder about other cultures' holidays and their celebrations?  Learn about and experience different aspects of a holiday through music, art, language and other cultural traditions. 
 
Learner Outcomes:
Art:  Students will create an image inspired by the culture and traditions of the Mexican people's holiday, Dia de los muertos.
Music: The students will learn to sing a song in Spanish.
Cultural: Students will become aware of the history of The Day of the Dead as well as the cultural traditions..
 
Time: 
60 Minute videoconference
 
Preparation:
Art:
  1. Choose one Day of the Dead art activity to fit your interest/ability/work space. 
  2. Have the entire class make the project so they understand process and there will be finished student work to show. 
  3. Break your class into groups to perform the following tasks. 
  4. Each group should work ahead of time to create the visuals needed to teach the lesson.
Groups:
    • Give introduction
    • Show/explain supplies needed
    • Show the steps
    • Show finished project
Music:
  1. Explain vocubulary words; list words on document camera
  2. Teach song by rote, phrase by phrase.
  3. Demonstrate motions to song
  4. Sing song 2-3 times to become familiar
 
Cultural:
    1.  Divide the class into groups.   
    2.  Have each group choose one of the cultural notes topics to research and prepare to teach.
    3.  Each group should prepare a short lesson to teach to the other groups and visiting sites.  Visuals should be included. 
  
Materials:

Videoconference Agenda
5 min.:   Welcome and introductions. Each class shares their location and brief introductions about their school.
50 - 55 min.:  Three fifteen minute presentations with a few minutes in between each to set up. 
                       (Participants can decide the order of presentations.)
5 min.: Debriefing and to say good bye.
        (Amount of time spent on each activity can be changed to fit the scheduling need of participants.)

Post Activities:
  • Journal Activity: Compare and contrast The Day of the Dead with other holidays.
  • Perform the song for others
  • Display artwork
