  • Money
  • Insurance Cover (inc. Winter Sports)
  • Photocopies of documents and reservation information
  • Signed Disclaimer for the conference
  • iPod
  • Laptop
  • Apple power cord (the long one)
  • DVI-to-VGA adapter
  • VGA Cable
  • Plug converters
  • Notebook
  • Phone
  • Video Camera / Camera / whatever
  • Chargers, batteries
  • Books/Kindle (for when the coding gets too much) (Never been known to happen)
  • Clothes that can be layered (casual as specified on the Mindview site no problems there)
  • Thick socks
  • Sneakers (or "Trainers" as they're called in Scotland)
  • Walking boots
  • Head lamp (for night time walking)
  • Toiletries
  • Headache pills (in case the altitude gets to you)
  • Cold medicine (it's freezing and the local stores are not well stocked)
  • Sun glasses (the glare gets really bad off the snow)
  • Sunscreen (SPF 15 or greater)
  • Lip protector (ditto)
  • Saline nasal spray (those prone to nosebleeds or from far more humid climates sometimes have difficulty with the relative aridity)
  • Swimming gear (in case you have a hot tub)
  • A TSA-suitable lock for your luggage
  • Remove one t-shirt from your luggage to make room for the Java Posse t-shirt you'll be getting

Body preparation

  • Drink lots of water for a few weeks in advance to help with the acclimatisation to the altitude
(at least drink a lot on the last day, and during the trip to CB)
What’s the scientific basis for this idea?
I've (JPN) always been a little dubious on the scientific merits of this argument: seems to me that the timescales on which cells operate (ms->m) are much faster than are justifiable on this hypothesis. OTOH: I've always followed this advice, and never had a headache...
