Introduction

Jason Sturgess is Head of School and Professor of Financial Economics at the School of Economics and Finance at Queen Mary University of London. Prior to joining Queen Mary University of London in 2017, he held positions at Driehaus College of Business and Kellstadt Graduate School of Business, DePaul University, and McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University. He graduated in 2008 from London Business School with a Ph.D in Finance.

Jason’s research lies in the boundaries of corporate finance, corporate governance, and financial intermediation. Most recently, his attention has been drawn to understanding better how banks make lending decisions in light of legal and institutional frictions, that in turn affect the real economy via firm-level investment and financing constraints. Additionally, some new work examines the role of information in decision-making by financial experts such as investment analysts and bank loan managers. His work on corporate governance focuses on the role of monitors, such as institutional investors or lawyers; and also on establishing the value of shareholder democracy through identifying the value of the vote. Finally, his work on corporate investment policy attempts to understand determinants of corporate investments. This work has examined organic investment as well as mergers and acquisitions, both domestically and globally.

Jason’s work has been published at The Journal of Finance, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Financial Economics, Management Science, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, the Review of Finance, and Review of Corporate Finance Studies. His work has been recognized internationally and he has won the BlackRock Inc. and National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) Global Challenge for Innovation Award, and an Institute for Quantitative Research in Finance (the Q Group) research grant, and has won best paper awards at the Review of Corporate Finance Studies, China International Conference in Finance, Financial Management Association, Mid-West Finance Association, and Spanish Finance Association Annual Meetings. He regularly presents work at international conferences including the annual meetings of the American Finance Association, Western Finance Association, NBER meetings, European Finance Association, SFS Cavalcade, Utah Winter Finance Conference, UBC Winter Finance Conference, and Financial Management Association.

Jason has experience of teaching Ph.D, MBA, Masters, and Undergraduate classes in finance at Queen Mary University of London, DePaul University, Georgetown University, and London Business School including advanced MBA and Masters courses in Mergers & Acquisitions, Problems in Corporate Financial Policy, Cases in Financial Decision Making, Corporate Finance, and Primary Markets.
