Communication Style



Politeness, in Linguistic terms, defines as the procedure that an individual arranges linguistic interaction in a given situation properly. There are three rules of politeness, created by Robin Lakoff, which consist of Don’t impose, Give options, and Maintain camaraderie. These three rules are considered as politeness varying from different cultures (Maha, 2014; Fasold & Connor-Linton, 2006).


Indirectness is to communicate with others implicitly rather than explicitly (Fasold & Connor-Linton, 2006). Different cultures value indirectness differently; some cultures refer it as a strategy of being polite whereas some disagree (Muhammed, 2013).

Verbal and Nonverbal Communication

Verbal Communication: the communication between people by sharing the information through words and speech. In the business world, it is very important for an individual to effectively use oral communication that need to be understood by all individuals and appropriately pronounce and stress words in a certain circumstance (“Verbal Communication,” n.d.).

Nonverbal Communication: the communication between individuals without the use of words, including body language, facial expressions, eye contact, touching, tone of voice, gestures, posture, and personal space (“What is Nonverbal,” n.d.).
