ADDITIONAL AUDIO COURSES ON DVD (mp3 format)

Summary:
Latinum teaches Latin. The site opens a pathway to full command of the language. (The YouTube site additionally has French, Hebrew  and English language resources)

Many of our course materials are available for free, and are based on out of copyright textbooks, or copyright-free materials.

You will find everything you need here to learn Latin to an advanced level. There is no need to even buy textbooks, if you are prepared to use digital books. Everything you need is also available on DVD or for download on my little store – prices are very low.

Method:
Molendinarius (Evan der Millner) has constructed Latinum as an audio course, based directly on the course of progress followed by students in the Renaissance, at a time when Latin was used regularly by educated people across Europe for reading, writing, and speaking.

The goal of Latinum  to give you the tools to master Latin, in all its forms.  To this end, textbooks that were written for teaching Latin as a ‘workhorse’ language are used –Comenius‘ 17th century course ( possibly the most complete Latin course yet written, covering 4 years of full-time education), Adler‘s Practical Grammar, and various Structured Dialogues, and simple stories.

You can follow the steps  broadly outlined here – but feel free to use the materials in any order. You are encouraged to begin working with Adler. A proposed course outline can be found at my Weebly site.

JOHN TAYLOR'S DECONSTRUCTED TEXT OF CAESAR FOR BEGINNERS - SERIAL AND ORAL METHOD (3)

John Taylor was publisher to University College, London. He produced a noted series of educational texts in Latin, primarily interlinears. This text does something else - it atomises the language of Caesar, and reassembles it step by step. This text is a wonderful gateway to Caesar, and is an efficient mechanism for learning Latin sentence structure and grammar intuitively.
More complete material is on sale at the Latinum store.

PART ONE

COMENIUS' VESTIBULUM (1)

Why study to speak Latin using the Vestibulum? Comenius' Vestibulum introduces model sentences covering the essential grammatical structures of Latin, and a core working vocabulary. It is the first part of Comenius' Course.

01 The Vestibulum read in English only (1)

Familiarise yourself to make reading Latin easier by studying the text  in English, before approaching it in Latin. Comenius wanted his students to memorise the vernacular text, as this was the speediest route to vocabulary acquisition. We don't necessarily need to do that.

Der Kleine Lateine is a summary of material from the Orbis Sensualium Pictus. If you are serious about your Latin, the using this as a review text will help solidify the vocabulary you have picked up from the Vestibulum and the Orbis Sensualium Pictus. Latinum's Audio Course (Downloads and DVDs)

COMENIUS' LATIUM REDIVIVU(4)

Pexenfelder's text follows on from Comenius, with the same aims - to build breadth of vocabulary. He explains the meaning of words and develops understanding. This text would be accessible after studying the Orbis Sensualium Pictus. The Latin makes fewer concessions to the beginner than that found in Comenius' beginner and intermediate works.

CONVERSATIONAL LATIN FROM CORDERIUS AND OTHER SOURCES

Corderius was a core text for students of Latin for over 400 years. Most university students had a copy (we know that, as Cambridge kept records of the room contents of students who passed away while at the university), usually accompanied by works by Erasmus. Corderius provides a framework for learning conversational Latin. More complete Corderius material is on sale at the Latinum store.

LATIN PARAPHRASES

Latin paraphrases were created, making the texts more accessible to upper level students during the early modern period. Once your Latin has reached a level where you seldom need a dictionary, but Classical sentence structures are still in need of explanation, works such as John Stirling's will provide a useful intermediate step - one rung higher than interlinear texts, they are the final tier before using texts in the Usum Delphini series.

In the original curriculum, the first classical texts students learned tended to be Eutropius, Caesar, Nepos, and Curtius,as in some respects these are the most accessible Classical authors. Celsus is also a reasonably easy read, but, being a medical text, has more limited appeal - though for those of us wanted to become fluent in Latin, we need to read a wide range of texts to build a more complete vocabulary. More complete Cornelius Nepos material is on sale at the Latinum store.

Of the Roman poets, Catullus is possibly the most accessible to the modern reader. His style is clear and direct.

FABLE LITERATURE

Fables have been part of the core Latin curriculum for centuries. They are seldom encountered in modern textbooks, as most were penned in times after the Classical Period - although we know from the Romans themselves that they formed a core part of the curriculum in ancient times. This continued until the later 1700s. After the 1800's when Latin as a language that was spoken began to die away, the idea of 'authentic Latin' took hold, and these amazing texts were ditched. I strongly advise a student who wants to achieve a natural level of fluency to study the fable literature.
