The participation of the parents, TDSB staff and people from the community made our Ward 5 Forum successful at Northview Secondary School on Tuesday, February 5, 2008. My introductory speech was about The School Council and Principal as Engines of Change, and then we headed right into the award ceremony. I handed the microphone over to Sandra Tondat, principal of Northview, who announced the winner of The Ideas Competition from the University of Toronto: Vlad T., a student at Northview.

Then we were in for a treat from the site supervisor at Forest Valley Outdoor Education Centre, Sandee Sharpe. Her passionate presentation The Power of Experiential Learning along with her display board enthralled the audience as Sandee talked about the educational programs at Forest Valley and, in particular, the importance of students learning about our natural surroundings, Canadian heritage, while tasting maple syrup produced right at the centre.

Our keynote speaker was Gerry Connelly, director of education for the TDSB who spoke about Working Together to Support a Culture of Trust and Transparency, as close to the audience as possible, to discuss issues of concern and the achievements of the TDSB in 2007-2008. Director Connelly wanted parents and people from the Ward to ask her questions, share comments and connect with her. And they certainly did so! I was glad to see the interaction taking place between the parents, constituents and Gerry. Thank you to all who came out that evening.
