Scientific Data Management leadership
Dr. Ahrens currently provides leadership across three major scientific data management initiatives at LANL:
· Genesis Data Pillar — Serves as the LANL lead for this national scientific AI/data platform initiative, designed to accelerate scientific and mission-critical advances.
· DIANA Project — Co-leads this effort to discover, annotate, store, and transform LANL's data holdings, making them AI-ready for future research and applications.
· ASC Data Management Project — Leads development of the Data Science Infrastructure (DSI), an open-source data management library that underpins LANL's Genesis, DIANA, and ASC data management programs.
Founder and Design Lead of ParaView
Dr. Ahrens is the founder/design lead of ParaView, an open-source visualization tool designed to handle extremely large data. ParaView is broadly used for scientific visualization, it has been downloaded more than four million times and is in use at supercomputing and scientific centers worldwide.
Dr. Ahrens led efforts to advance LANL's Information Science & Technology Pillar by fostering high-quality research, driving specialized recruiting and strategy development, and sponsoring a range of programs, including summer schools, fellowships, rapid response research, university collaborations, and workshops, that cultivated talent and innovation across students, postdocs, and staff.
Former Lead of the Exascale Computing Project - Data and Visualization Area
Dr. Ahrens was the U.S. Exascale Computing Project (ECP)’s Data and Visualization lead for seven storage, data management and visualization projects that will be a key part of a vibrant exascale supercomputing application and software ecosystem.
