Industrial and Site Visits:

  • TATA Power:  TATA power is recognized as India’s largest private sector power utility, built up over nearly nine decades. The Tata Power Thermal Power Generating Station, Trombay is India’s first 500 MW unit. I had the opportunity to observe their maintenance division at close quarters. I was impressed by the skills and work of expert machinist who handled 12 feet auxiliary turbine blades with ease.
  • TATA Motors: I organized the Industrial Visit to the sprawling TATA motors plant in Pune. We explored the complete assembly of a truck and also the automated welding of the TATA Dicor (SUV) chassis. It is one of the few plants where crucial parts such as gears, crankshafts are not outsourced but manufactured. We thus had the opportunity to observe most production processes that we learnt in classrooms. The benefits of an automated process in terms of speed and flexibility were evident in manufacturing of the Dicor.
  • Mahindra and Mahindra Tractor: We visited the engine assembly plant and shop floor of M&M a leading tractor manufacturer in India. Their Engine assembly section is considered one of the best in India and most of the processes are automated. The Engine Assembly plant was a peek into the world on Industrial Automation.
