The activities marking the International Year of Astronomy 2009 do not stop. The commitment to transfer part of the joys of astronomy to the citizens of Macedonia during this year is very strong. We are celebrating the IYA2009 in our country with a variety of lectures, public observations, exhibitions of astrophotography, and by posting short astronomical news on our website. We will continue to do this until the end of the year.
The first educational astronomy youth camp in Macedonia will be held from the 18th until the 20th of September 2009 at the megalithic observatory Kokino. It is organized under the auspices of the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe (BRESCE) and with the assistance of the municipality Staro Negorichane. In the three days of the camp the participants will be able to hear several lectures on various astronomical topics, acquire basic knowledge about the planets in our solar system, learn how to observe through a telescope and how to photograph an object in the sky.
The lectures will be held in the classrooms of the boarding house in the village Dragomance, near Kokino, where the camp participants will be accommodated, as well. The participants in this camp are 20 students from primary and secondary schools from several cities in Macedonia who love astronomy and want to learn more about it. Each participant will receive a gift CD with documentaries, lectures, astronomical photos, etc., which they can use to further their knowledge in the field of astronomy.
This event is organized by members of the Macedonian Astronomical Society and Skopje Astronomical Society. The main sponsor of the event is UNESCO or, more precisely, the Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe (BRESCE). Of course, it is all under the umbrella of the International Year of Astronomy 2009, the main organizers of which are UNESCO and the United Nations. We also received great support from the municipality Staro Negorichane, which allowed us to use this beautiful location for the camp and use the boarding house in Dragomance to accommodate the participants.
