      posted May 24, 2010, 9:27 AM by Austin Powers   [ updated Jun 1, 2010, 10:15 AM ]

As the Spring 2010 semester comes to a close, the ISSS staff would like to wish everyone good luck with your final exams and all those papers we know you have to write.  Where ever you will be this summer, whether it’s at home with your family, traveling the world, or here in Albany with us, the ISSS staff would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and healthy summer. We will miss you all and look forward to seeing you again in the fall!

      Contents:

       1. Visit the Turkish Cultural Center booths at Tulip Festival this weekend!

      2. Be a Buddy to newly arriving international students in Fall 2010

      3. Do you have a room or apartment available for the Fall 2010 semester? Are you looking for a roommate?

      4. We need your help in planning ISSS summer events!

For more information on these topics, please see below.

      1. Visit the Turkish Cultural Center booths at Tulip Festival this weekend! Sat. & Sun., May 8 & 9 from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm in Washington Park.

Enjoy traditional Turkish food including Baklava, sarma (stuffed leaves), Gozleme, Lahmacun (Turkish Pizza), Manti, Bureks and Salads at booth 129.

The Turkish Cultural Information Stand – with a raffle, gifts, booklets and maps – is at booth 316.

      2. Be a Buddy to newly arriving international students in Fall 2010. Buddies for new students needed urgently!

Because of the large number of new international students requesting to be placed with a Buddy for the first couple weeks of classes, ISSS is asking again that if you have not signed up to be a Buddy, please think about being a helping resource for a new international student – just to help them find their way through their first days here in Albany.

Do you remember what it was like when you first arrived at UAlbany? Most new students feel overwhelmed. But you can help! Be a Buddy to a New International Student! Volunteers are needed to assist new international students before they come to Albany and during the first 2 - 3 weeks of classes in Fall 2010. See the attached flier for more information and a form to send us to say you'd like to help.

Right now, we have lots of students from around the world asking for a buddy for the beginning of the Fall 2010 semester.

      3. Do you have a room or apartment available for the Fall 2010 semester? Are you looking for a roommate?

If you know of any available housing for new international students – an apartment or a room – please let ISSS know as soon as possible. Please forward all information to the ISSS e-mail at ISSS@uamaila.albany.edu.

Attached is a copy of a sample ad that can be placed in ISSS.

      4. We need your help in planning ISSS summer events!

The ISSS is in the process of planning some fun things for the UAlbany international community to do this summer. But we need your help. We would like to know how many international students will be in Albany during the summer months and what kinds of activities you would like us to plan.

       Some of our ideas include:

      - A day trip to Lake George

      - A trip to Great Escape Amusement Park

      - A group tour of the Halfmoon (the replica of Henry Hudson’s ship that  first “discovered” this part of New York)

      - A group outing to an Alive @ 5 concert in Albany

      - A group outing to a free performance at the Playhouse in the Park (musical theatre in Washington Park)

If any of these ideas sound goo to you, or if you have any suggestions for us, or if you will be in Albany and want us to plan something, please contact Austin Powers at oiega@uamail.albany.edu or the rest of the ISSS staff at ISSS@uamail.albany.edu. We would love to hear what you want to do this summer!
