The highest death toll from the Israeli strikes Wednesday came in the village of Sreifa, east of the port city of Tyre, when at least 21 people were killed in an air raid, a Red Cross volunteer told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa. More bodies were feared trapped under the rubble, he said. Red Cross volunteers were appealing to the Israelis to allow them to enter the village to evacuate the wounded. Meanwhile six people, including a Lebanese woman, her three children and her maid, were killed in the market town of Nabatiyeh. Another six civilians, members of the same family, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a four-story building in the village of Nabi Sheet, east of the ancient city of Baalbeck. In another village near Tyre, 10 members of the same family were buried in the rubble when their home was completely destroyed during an Israeli raid, Lebanese police said. Since then, tit-for-tat Israeli airstrikes have reportedly killed up to 280 people in Lebanon, most of them civilians. NYT
The deadliest day yet in the deepening two-front Middle East crisis claimed more than 70 lives on Wednesday in Lebanon, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and northern Israel, with no immediate cease-fire in sight. In the first land combat in Lebanon during the conflict, two Israeli soldiers were killed and nine wounded when they were set upon by Hezbollah guerrillas near Naqura. The violence on Wednesday sprawled over both sides of the border. Two Israeli Arab brothers, ages 3 and 9, were killed as they played outside in Nazareth, the Galilee town where Jesus spent his boyhood, hit by one of roughly 120 rockets Hezbollah launched into Israel. Israeli weaponry rained down on Lebanon throughout the day and into the night, killing 63 people by nightfall, Lebanese authorities said. Most of the dead were said to be civilians; one Hezbollah fighter was killed, apparently in the Naqura firefight. Southern Lebanon, the heartland of Shiite villages dominated by Hezbollah, was particularly hard hit. In Srifa, a neighborhood was wiped out -- 15 houses flattened, 21 people killed, 30 wounded -- in an Israeli airstrike. The town's mayor, Afif Najdi, called it a massacre. Warplanes bombed a convoy escaping the town, killing several people and wounding many others. Farther north, in Ghaziyeh, one person was killed and two were wounded when an Israeli missile struck a building housing a Hezbollah social institution, and a nearby home. In Salaa, an airstrike destroyed several houses. Six people were killed in an attack on Nabatiyeh. In the Bekaa region, another Shiite and Hezbollah stronghold in the east, 11 people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a four-story building near Baalbek. Even as much of the attention was focused on Lebanon, fighting raged between Israelis and Palestinians in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, with 13 Palestinians killed in a series of Israeli raids. Fierce fighting in the Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza left at least seven Palestinians dead. By 9 in the morning, the lobby at Al Aksa Hospital in nearby Deir Al Balah was jammed with cots holding as many as 60 wounded Palestinians, mostly militia members but also some children. The wounds appeared to be mainly shrapnel from tank fire. Reporters and a cameramen for Al Jazeera television were slightly wounded covering the fighting and an ambulance driver who tried to come to their aid was also injured. At least three other Palestinians, one a woman, died in other incidents. In Nablus, on the West Bank, about 50 Israeli armored vehicles, including tanks and bulldozers, demolished a Palestinian security compound and a half-dozen other Palestinian government buildings in what the army said was a raid seeking militants. Three Palestinians were killed in the fighting; the army said they belonged to a cell activated by Hezbollah that was planning attacks.

Fifty-seven Lebanese civilians were killed by Israeli air strikes yesterday in the deadliest day since the assault began. As tens of thousands of people continued to flee towns and villages close to the southern border, Israeli troops crossed into Lebanon to raid suspected Hizbullah outposts. Two Israeli soldiers and a Hizbullah fighter were killed in clashes. But the day's main casualties were unarmed civilians. At least 17 people, including several children, were killed and 30 wounded in an air attack in the southern village of Srifa, residents said. Another 40 civilians were killed in various parts of south and east Lebanon, according to Lebanese security sources. They included three Indian workers who died when Israel hit a glass factory in the eastern Bekaa valley. Five people died when a missile struck the southern town of Nabatiyeh, police and hospital officials said. The target was a commercial office of a firm belonging to Hizbullah, but those killed were residents. In Israel, two Arab children living in the town of Nazareth were killed when a Hizbullah rocket struck near their home. The brothers, aged three and nine, and had been playing outside, police said. Another 14 people were wounded. A wave of rockets also landed across northern Israel, including the city of Haifa. Lebanon's prime minister said last night that 300 people had been killed, 1,000 wounded and half a million displaced in Israel's week-old onslaught. He said he would seek compensation from Israel for the "immeasurable loss".
