Charity/Service Updates

Information about projects our network could get involved with -- and ways our network could contribute both time and money in the service of literacy and libraries in the region.  A charity committee is investigating the possibilities and will be making recommendations to the network.

Donate used/weeded books to flooded Queensland schools

posted Apr 12, 2011, 4:51 PM by Katie Day   [ updated Apr 12, 2011, 4:54 PM ]

The following schools have given us permission to list them on the web site as having losses in their school resource centres. I have also listed their web sites so that you may have the opportunity to decide whether you can help one or more. It would be best if you contacted the school/s of your choice. As you can see the only secondary school listed is Milpera SHS. All of the schools are those who were affected by the first floods. No information has yet come to us about the schools affected by the northern cyclone. In any case we cannot list them without the permission of the principal.

Do you need a place to donate used books?

posted Apr 11, 2011, 7:01 PM by ISLNSingapore

In the past, I have talked about Marianna Pascal's work with needy children in Johor Bahru.  She has worked closely with our school for many years and has distributed hundreds upon hundreds of gently used children's books and elementary chapter books to needy schools, orphanages, children on plantations, and more.  She is continually expanding her contacts and is currently looking for other schools interested in collecting used books from the school community and/or discarded library books.

If you are interested in connecting with Marianna, please email her directly (mariannapascal@yahoo.com).  She and her husband will come into Singapore and pick up the books.  Marianna is also very good about following up with photos and a write-up of where the donations have gone and how the people were affected by this generosity.

Cheers,
Stacey

For example, here is a PDF letter from SIPAR where they describe the kind of training they can provide to two new library assistants for the Indochina Starfish Foundation's library (an undertaking supported by UWCSEA East).

"Our initial steps have included building a library with both English and Bahasa books. The theme of this library is books that are suitable for children and books about the environment. To help fund the cost of this library we plan to publish two books written by PDA staff (and translated by us) that we will sell to guests on Nikoi and further afield."

This is quite near to Singapore so day trips would be possible.

Open Book in Phnom Penh

posted Feb 24, 2011, 10:28 PM by ISLNSingapore

Open Book (Au Livre Ouvert in the original French -- just ask Google to translate the page for you), an open library (Reading Room) for children in Phnom Penh, is the project of Catherine Cousins, who lives in Singapore now.

Catherine works closely with picture book author Frederick Lipp (The Caged Birds of Phnom Penh, and Running Shoes) and publishes his books in Khmer and French. (See also his charity - Cambodian Arts & Scholarship Foundation.)

Here is a recent message from her in response to Stacey asking her about projects we might get involved in:

I would be very happy to meet with you to speak about librarian network and while I was in Phnom Penh I thought of different possibilities.

One of them is IBBY cambodia which is just now beiing created.Do you know this association in other countries?

I also came back with photos of open book 1. and now there is also an open book 2 (too...) in a poorer area of phnom penh. I was there saturday and took photos thinking of you.

In both place the staff could use training ... ( they could sleep at my apartment...).  We are also in need of materials like book shelves at open book 2.

I am also in contact with libraries in cambodian jails and small country side libraries who are in need of books but they want them in Khmer language.  The organisation SIPAR has been publishing very good ones.

PS: One new book from fred lipp will be very soon out : CHALK.
