Measures and Weights

Medieval Islamic societies used different ratios  for weights and measures at different points in times, so measures and weights were not unified across the Islamic economies. The main source for the data base is Hinz’s Islamische Mase und Gewichte: Umgerechnet ins metrische System, (Leiden 1970). We have used it through the English translation by M. Ismail Marcinkowski, Measures and Weights in the Islamic World, (Malaysia IIUM, 2003). In order to avoid confusion our  calculations always specify the location, year or the century and  we have also included a general section for terms where exact date or location are not provided by Hinz.
