The Cartel Clash

By Max Reisser

The drug wars near the Mexican border are brutal and unforgiving. Most of Mexico is influenced by drug production or drug smuggling. Last week the military and the Zetas drug cartel clashed. 27 armed cartel gunmen died in this incident according to CNN. The military said that it was a successful raid against the second most powerful drug cartel in Mexico. People say that this happens often, but the media never talks to because most of the Mexican news is influenced by the cartels. The people gave the reporters information, but the people are scared, and will not say a lot, because they fear the drug cartels will find them and have them executed. At the beginning of the year the Mexican police discovered several mass graves near the American border according to CNN. The Mexican police believe that the Sinaloa and the Carrillo drug cartels are responsible for these.
There are several cartels that control most of the land in Mexico. The two most powerful groups are the Sinaloa and the Zetas cartels. That means that the people on the cartels “property” get jobs from the drug lord. The drug lords are not ooften hated, but some of the people that live on these “properties” are happy that the cartels exsits for the one reason: they build schools and other buildings. The drug lord is popular with the people because he protects them from Mexican police and the American search troops.
The same things are happening all over the world and even in places like Serbia.

The Genius Behind WikiLeaks

By Iva Djukic

October, 2010, over 400,000 documents regarding the Afghan war and several other topics of discussion have been leaked by WikiLeaks. The non-profit organization has been anonymously leaking secret and otherwise confidential documents to the public for years. WikiLeaks often times receives criticism because of the fact that it releases confidential documents that are meant to “protect” the citizens of a nation because of their contents.

It seems rather ludicrous that someone could think that hiding documents could protect a nation, wouldn’t you say? Isn’t it much better to bring about problems in the open and actually getting them solved rather than putting them away for 20 years or so? I thought so.

Meanwhile, the genius behind WikiLeaks, Julian Assange (39), is taking a lot of heat from media and it doesn’t really make sense to me. Even Julian Assange said it himself, “What are the differences between Mark Zuckerberg and me? I give private information on corporations to you for free, and I’m a villain. Zuckerberg gives you private information to corporations for money and he’s Man of theYear”.

It’s rather disappointing that Julian Assange had to deal with two sexual harassment lawsuits ONE day after the release of many confidential documents in October. Coincidence? I think not. Seems as if perfect timing is constantly present, wouldn’t you say? People such as Sarah Palin, a joke of a politician representing the Republican party, stated that Julian Assange is un-American… Well, in my opinion you should forgive the man for being AUSTRALIAN. Yes, Sarah Palin, it may be hard to believe, but not everyone who can speak English is American.

Other media is constantly throwing Julian Assange under the bus, which is unfair because the rest of the media should be afraid that they will be next. New York Times even published what certain cables were talking about, so why shouldn’t their heads be on a silver platter? The last thing I thought would happen in the United States would be the censorship of information. Isn’t this what every “patriotic, family-values,” and “moral” republicans fight against? Going against what the country was founded upon? Notice how Assange has also been dubbed a “terrorist” by these republicans and conservatives. Why? How is he terrorizing people? Seems to me that the opposition for one, doesn’t know what they’re talking about, and two, they throw terms like “terrorist” around too loosely. Does it make it ok? I certainly hope not.

Fear not though, there are groups that have Julian Assange’s back. Anonymous, for one, has been protesting worldwide on November 5th, 2011 and January 15th, 2011 for the sake of freedom on the internet. If you wish to find out more about these protests, go on www.whyweprotest.net to find out more.

Julian Assange is an inspiration and a journalist that stands for integrity and truth. If you can’t handle the truth, then you may as well shut yourself off from the world because we live in the real world, and the truth is, when something’s broken, you need to fix it. The system needs fixing and as individuals we should fight back for Assange and Private Bradley Manning.

Deadly Housekeepers?

By Priyanka Sethi

“Hey honey! Umm, I wanted to tell you that I slept with another woman 14 years ago. But I regret it, I really do. Forgive me?”

Arnold Schwarzenegger, known to many as the ‘Governator’ is a former bodybuilder, actor, model, businessman and politician. Most people just know him as the lead actor in ‘Terminator’ and ‘Predator’. He won the Mr. Universe title in 1969 and also the Mr. Olympia contest seven times. However, his recent publicity is not caused by any of his numerous talents, but due to him having fathered a son fourteen years ago, while he was married to Maria Shriver and was the Governor of California.

Many women had come forward before, claiming that he had been cheating with them, others claiming that he had groped them. Yes, keeping his hands to himself is something he’s still trying to accomplish. However, the biggest scandal yet was his affair with his housekeeper, Mildred Patricia Baena. She had given birth to their son several years ago, but chose not to tell anyone of this news. Recently, after a fight with Arnold, she threatened to leak the secret. Only then did Arnold reveal to his wife, Shriver, that he had another child. This eventually led to their divorce on the 9th of May, 2011. Baena told the press about working in Arnold’s house while pregnant with his child, and with Shriver pregnant with his child too. “He should die…” an anonymous person stated with their eyes wide open.

He apologized publically to his family, children and friends. His wife, who had spent 25 years with Arnold, is now left to deal with their children and his kids are left to deal with this shocking revelation. How much he regrets his actions, no one really knows, but does that change anything? I guess some things can’t be undone.

Sorry Shriver, you should have kept a male housekeeper…unless Arnold has another secret waiting to be told.

Brisbane Floods, Cause evacuation

By Chincia Shelley

Brisbane the capital of Queensland continues to suffer an extraordinary amount of rain fall since 10th of January. This has caused unnatural floods to occur throughout the state. Australia is a very flat and low lying country, so floods can occur easily especially with such large amounts of rain. Due to the immense size of the city and its population Brisbane suffers the most devastating damage as floods worsen. Roof tops show from the water of the flood, revealing the damage the water has caused. As stated by The Brisbane Times 13 were reported killed and more than 127,000 people affected by the flood. Dangerous crocodiles have been pulled into the inland because of the floods; having a population of 2 million, many are in danger. “I can’t believe what’s going on, my friend lives there, I’m afraid she’ll die!” said 15 year old Monica Tripe of Western Australia.

Brisbane now lays a ghost town in many areas, with no local activity. Toowoomba, another city in Queensland is also a victim of the floods with 8 people dead and 72 missing. Sand bags have been given out to civilians to prevent water from entering their homes.  According to the Associated Press news agency, the floods came like a tsunami and the water levels rose to 4.6 meters but never higher. Public transport to Brisbane’s airports, are limited because of all the water, people are also being advised to check in before traveling. The events of January 15 led Queensland’s Premier to decide to advise anyone living near the Brisbane River to move to higher ground.
The Powers

Forbes...Who? What? When? Where? How and Why? For those who are wondering, Forbes is a privately held publishing and media company. Rece

ntly they published a list with the top 68 most powerful people in the world out of a choice of 6.8 billion. It is a multibillion dollar company comparing their thoughts with the student body at I.S.B. is quite an ingenious plan. One very interesting figure to look is that the ages of the top 5 most powerful people, which is quite high.  A list of the top 5 most powerful people in the world according to Forbes is given below:

1.    Hu Jintao , President of the People’s Republic of China        Age: 67
2.    Barack Obama, President of The United States of America    Age: 49
3.    Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz al Saud, King of Saudi Arabia        Age: 86
4.    Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister of Russia                Age: 58
5.    Pope Benedict XVI, Pope of The Roman Catholic Church         Age: 83
As you can see, many of the most powerful people are above the age of 50; except for President Barack Obama who is going to touch the 50 landmark in another 9 months. After a recent survey, students choose these people as the most powerful in the world.
1.    Barack Obama, President of The United States of America (40 votes)
2.    Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft( 17 votes)
3.    Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister of Russia ( 12 votes)
4.    Hu Jintao, President of the People’s Republic of China (10 votes)
5.    Queen of England (9 votes)
It can be seen that the students and Forbes had three of the same people in common except the students added Bill Gates and the Queen of England at the cost of King of Saudi Arabia and The Pope.
I certainly agree with the list created by Forbes because now Bill Gates and the Queen of England are not as powerful as they were before.

Top Row: Hu Jintao, Barack Obama, King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz al Saud
Bottom Row: Vladimir Putin, Pope Benedict XVI
